“As President of the Maine State Bar Association, selecting speakers for our annual conference is one of the biggest challenges we face. We want presentations that are educational, engaging, and memorable, while also providing our members with meaningful opportunities to learn and reflect.

When another bar leader suggested hiring Steve Edenbo as Thomas Jefferson, I was intrigued but admittedly a bit skeptical as I wasn't really sure what the presentation would entail. However, with the nation's 250th anniversary approaching and the Maine State Bar Association celebrating its 135th anniversary, we thought it would be a fitting addition to our historical theme, so we invited Steve Edenbo to our event.

Steve exceeded every expectation.

From the moment he arrived, he was Thomas Jefferson. He remained in character throughout the presentation and even stayed afterward to answer questions and take photos with attendees. His energy, humor, and command of history kept our audience engaged for the entire 90-minute program.

What impressed me most, however, was his ability to make history feel relevant.

He brought the Election of 1800 to life by explaining how Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, political rivals with profoundly different views, ultimately recognized the importance of principle over partisanship in preventing an unprincipled demagogue from gaining power. It sparked thoughtful conversations about leadership, democracy, and the importance of working across differences.

Later, during the question-and-answer session, someone asked how Jefferson could justify owning slaves. Steve did not attempt to excuse or defend history. Instead, he challenged us with a question I haven't stopped thinking about since.

He asked us to imagine standing before an audience 200 years from now. What practices that seem normal or convenient today will future generations struggle to understand? What are we accepting simply because they are part of the world we inherited? Are there things we are doing now that the future will judge us for?

That question stayed with me long after the conference ended.
